In my worst course in history, Psychiatry, the entire semester was spent with Dr. Cohen asking our class, “What is disease?” No matter what one of us said, he never accepted the answer. Finally, one of my classmates said, “Dr. Cohen, if one of us ever defines disease to your satisfaction, what the hell will you do with it?” Our laughter broke up the class. And in a later lecture, the Chair of Psychiatry said, “There are some people who do not like people. They should stay and teach!” The two events are the highlights of my experience with psychiatry.
The opposite question, What is Health, was never raised.
If Dr. John Knowles was correct, “99% of people are born healthy and become unhealthy because of human misbehavior.” Where does this misbehavior begin? Surely the newborn does not misbehave!
In working with over 30,000 chronically depressed patients, most stated that they could not remember ever being happy. Less commonly, a major family problem occurred in the first 5-7 years of life. Thus, it seems that something very early in life led to depression and anxiety.
There is considerable evidence that the “something” is insufficient oxytocin. Obviously, many other neurochemical systems are also disrupted – serotonin, dopamine and the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems. Homeostasis is normal.
As I have stated before, the oxytocin system may be damaged — a stressful pregnancy, an induced labor or delivery of the child with the mother anesthetized.
The first and most critical issue in being healthy is a nurturing conception, gestation and delivery. A child may be born physically healthy but without basic homeostatic ability. All added stress may weaken the system further:
- Physical stress
- Chemical stress
- Emotional stress
- Electromagnetic stress
Habits that help homeostasis include:
- Real food
- Physical activity
- Nurturing environment.
The human misbehavior of parents and/or environment lead to disease. Genetics play a role but many genetically prone diseases are less likely to develop with optimal nurturing and good health habits.
