IHMS 2017 Speaker Presentation: Dr. David Brownstein, M.D.
Holistic Medicine for the 21st Century: What Works and What Doesn’t Work
This full-day lecture will divided into four sections.
Section I will review the problems with relying on drug therapies such as statin drugs. In this talk, you will learn how journal articles use statistics to make a poorly performing drug or therapy appear more efficacious than it actually is. Relative risk, absolute risk, and number needed to treat will be reviewed and actual studies will be dissected so that the listener will be able to properly review a research study and make their own statistical calculations to determine if the drug or therapy is truly effective or not.
Section II will discuss thyroid problems. The thyroid is a master gland in the body. Every cell depends on adequate thyroid hormone for optimal function. In this section, the listener will understand which thyroid tests to order and how to interpret the results. This includes the reverse T3 level. Also, how to optimize thyroid function will be discussed.
Section III will cover iodine. Iodine is an essential nutrient required by every cell in the body. It is impossible to make any hormone without having adequate iodine in the glands of the body. Iodine levels have fallen over 50% over the last 40 years and this may account for the epidemic of cancer and disease of the glandular tissues—including the breast, ovary, uterus, prostate, thyroid, and pancreas. How to properly dose iodine will also be discussed.
Section IV will discuss the importance of maintaining adequate salt levels in the body. Salt is an essential nutrient we cannot live without. Salt is essential for proper adrenal and thyroid function. Most people are deficient in salt. The various forms of salt—refined and unrefined—will be discussed. How to prescribe salt will be reviewed.
Participants will learn:
- Calculate, discuss and assess the difference between relative risk and absolute risk in a medical study
- Evaluate thyroid function tests and understand the importance of reverse T3 testing
- List the halides and understand which halides are essential and which are toxic
- Understand how to use competitive inhibition to help the body detoxify from toxic halides
