Depression: Number 1 or Number 2???
C. Norman Shealy, M.D., Ph.D.
A recent BBC article reported that depression is second only to chronic back pain as a cause of major disability, according to a study by Dr Alize Ferrari from the University of Queensland’s School of Population Health and reported in the journal PLOS Medicine.
Interestingly, my work for 40 years was largely on patients with chronic pain, most often back pain, all of whom were also depressed. Which came first? There is considerable evidence that individuals with long-standing low-grade depression are far more likely to become invalids with chronic pain! And virtually 100% of my patients had already failed to improve with up to 4 or more antidepressants! In fact, antidepressants may be the least effective drugs in the world.
And improvement in both pain and depression can be achieved far easier without antidepressant drugs.
- First and LEAST expensive treatment—Air Bliss, remarkably good in 80% of depressed people
- If that does not work–The Liss Cranial electrical Stimulator, plus Magnesium Lotion, plus the Shealy RelaxMate-works in 85% of people
With Air Bliss first and the combo for the 20% who do not respond to it, 97% of depressed patients can be tremendously improved at a cost well below 6 months of antidepressant drug treatment! And incidentally, without any of the intensive “psychotherapy” that goes on for months! In fact, a recent article stated that “average” “care” for depression costs $7000 annually! RIDICULOUS!!!
