COLD – Fx

COLD-Fx

This product is a proprietary extract of North American ginseng, developed and available in Canada for 10 years and endorsed by their hockey association. Initial studies with the Edmonton Oilers reported that the players had fewer colds and flu. Researchers at Eastern Virginia Medical School conducted two separate double blind, placebo controlled studies, giving COLD-fX to almost 200 individuals over the age of 80. There was an 89% reduction in the incidence of flu and acute respiratory illness among those taking COLD-fX. Other studies have shown greater than 50% efficacy in a wider group of individuals. And duration of symptom is reduced at least 50% in those who do contract the viral illnesses.

Animal studies have demonstrated that COLD-Fx increases interleukin-1 and -6, helper lymphocytes, suppressor lymphocytes, natural killer cells and gamma-interferon. In other words a panoramic immune enhancer! Safety appears as great as efficacy. Dosages up to 25 times the recommended dosages have been found to be totally free of adverse effects.

Recommended dosages:

One 200 mg capsule twice daily as a preventative. Take up to 9 capsules the day of onset of a cold; 6 the next day and 3 the third day. Continue with 2 daily thereafter. It may be available at some pharmacies. The least expensive source I have found so far is www.CanadaMedicineShop.com, 1-800-501-4214.

Of course, I particularly like the idea of using both Argentyn 23 and COLD-fX. This seems to be worth the reduced risk of illness. There are other implications for this combination. Obviously long term studies need to be done. However, the immune boosting properties could theoretically result in reduction of a wide variety of other illnesses from coronary artery disease to cancer. It may be many years before the studies needed to prove this theory. Meanwhile, avoiding and minimizing colds and flu is a worthy beginning!
