I had the great privilege of knowing Virginia Satir, the wonderful creator of Family Therapy. Indeed, she did one of her last workshops here just a few months before her death. Her most important refrain was “We need 4 hugs a day for survival. We need 8 hugs a day for maintenance. We need 12 hugs a day for growth.” Indeed, when I went to create Holos University Graduate Seminary, I purposefully chose HUGS as the foundation for the name.
Most recently a study at the Carnegie Melon University by Professor Sheldon Cohen showed that hugs improved immunity and protection from individuals purposefully exposed to the cold virus!! No surprise to me but tremendously useful research to reinforce this common-sense approach to life.
Hugs are just one of the many ways to enhance mood, well-being and oxytocin, the most critical mood hormone for good self-esteem and ultimately health and longevity. Remember that oxytocin-competent conscientious individuals live longer, are healthier and have a higher lifetime income. If you are not getting and giving your daily essential HUGS, add Air Bliss!!
